Feeling is healing
Why is it that we run away from our emotions?
I have often pondered this. One example for me came up after reflecting on the fact that I have moved around a lot, changed jobs and travelled around the world. What I used to find was an uncomfortable sensation would arise after the euphoria of the newness of a place or situation would fall away, otherwise known as the honeymoon effect. I would turn to entertainment, going out with friends, all things to distract myself. But actually what I needed to do was explore this feeling.
Until I found that this sensation was the very thing that was keeping me stuck and holding me back. Finally I surrendered and started to feel these sensations. Waves of emotion started to arise, from sadness to frustration to anger. And the thoughts around these emotions were, “why am I not happy”, “why does x have more money/friends/romantic partners than I do”…and the rest. All of these stemming from the core wound of not feeling good enough.
Does this sound familiar?
After moving into the healing field 10 years ago, I explored ways to feel and express these emotions. From breathwork to yoga then dance to meditation. All of these have helped me explore and dive into what I thought was scary territory.
So why don’t we feel our emotions?
Well I have a few theories on this. For starters, our power is in our emotions and the amount of latent energy that is held within our bodies with unexpressed emotions is HUGE! If our society was to teach more people about the energetic aspect of feeling and expressing our emotions in positive ways…well you know what would happen. We would become very powerful beings and unable to be controlled.
Some of the ways our society currently distracts us from feeling our emotions include (note list is not exhaustive): buying material items, working a 5 day week which leaves us emotionally, physically and mentally drained, caffeine, alcohol, drugs and other substances to numb and drown out our feelings and emotions. And of course, there are more distractions. And the thing to note is that once you start to become aware of this and move past these distractions, more will appear to stray you off the path of your own healing.
To become a fully empowered, emotionally expressive BE-ing, we need to recognise that our power is not in our external. It is from accessing energies from within us.
I always like to refer back to ancient wisdom, and in the Taoist traditions, you are the creator of your emotions, not the victim of them. And this of course applies to ALL emotions, positive and negative. Once you ponder this, you realise that by mastering and expressing your emotions this will lead you on the way to realising your dreams.
Emotions arise from our thinking and beliefs about ourselves and the world. And once you allow these emotions to come up you can understand what thoughts or beliefs are behind them. Becoming a coach and healer has helped me become aware of my own beliefs and thoughts that create my reality. And this has also allowed me to share the tools I have learnt to help others to do the same.
When we grow past our old beliefs and thought patterns, we start to express emotions that are aligned with our new beliefs which gives us the power to expand into the true powerful beings that we are.
